Here are some useful questions when choosing a nursery for your child

Why choose Sunshine Nursery?

Sunshine Nursery is the longest established nursery in the Kirkcaldy area and we opened our Glenrothes nursery 10 years later. Both nurseries hold an excellent reputation. We have been caring for the individual needs of children in small groups for many years. We have a happy, warm and friendly environment with a highly qualified and motivated team which is the perfect combination to enable your child to excel. To find out how to book a visit see below.

How will staff settle my child in to nursery?

Settling your child into nursery is a very individual matter as each child will cope with their nursery experience differently. Staff will work with you to decide the best way forward. We recommend at least two visits before your child starts nursery. We advise ample time for visits to accommodate the needs of you and your child. These visits give you and your child the opportunity to start to build relationships with staff and become familiar with the nursery setting. We understand that starting nursery is a big step for you and your child and we aim to work with you to make this transition as smooth as possible.

How many children are in the nursery?

Sunshine Nursery Kirkcaldy is registered for up to 31 children at any one time. Sunshine Nursery Glenrothes is registered for up to 54 children at any one time.

How many children are in my child’s room?

At Sunshine Nursery we believe in caring for children in small groups therefore all of our nursery rooms are designed with this in mind. The amount of children in each room depends on their age and which nursery they attend.

What are the ratios?

The ratios are set by the Care Inspectorate and vary depending on your child's age, these are as follows:

children under 2 is 1:3

children aged 2 - 3  is 1:5

children aged 3 and over  is 1:8.

How will I know what my child has been doing at nursery?

We have a variety of ways of communicating with parents. Staff in each room will discuss daily with parents what their child has been doing. Staff will display artwork and photos around the nursery to demonstrate the activities and learning adventures their child has been having. Parents receive a daily information sheet and every term newsletters are given out. Key workers have one-to-one meetings with parents every second month to update on their child’s development and once a year there is a parents evening. We have an open door policy and management and staff are always available to discuss any matters.

How long has your team worked for Sunshine Nursery?

At Sunshine Nursery we take pride in the fact that we retain our staff. This is due to having a mutual respect for each team member’s individuality and maintaining good two-way communication between staff and management. This results in a happy, relaxed and motivated workforce who excel at what they do which in turn creates a happy and positive learning environment for the children.  Please click on our Staff to find out more about our team.

What qualifications and experience does your staff have?

The majority of our staff are qualified to the highest standard. The managers at Sunshine Nursery both hold managerial qualifications along with their nursery nurse qualification. Our managers are currently studying for their BA in Childhood Practice. All nursery nurses hold either their HNC in Childcare and Education or their SVQ 3 in Childrens Care, Learning and Development. We also employ staff within the company as nursery assistants who are training towards their nursery nurse qualifications. At Sunshine Nursery we encourage continuous professional development to ensure our children receive the highest standard of care.

Who regulates the nurseries, and how often?

Sunshine Nursery is registered by the Care Inspectorate, who determine how often to inspect us in light of our inspection grades. Due to the nursery being in partnership with Fife Council and eligible for the pre-school grant, we are also inspected by HMIE and Fife Councils Equate team. The nursery is also inspected on a regular basis by the Fire Department and Environmental Health to ensure health and safety regulations are met. Please click here for our inspection grades for Kirkcaldy and also Glenrothes.

Is the nursery in partnership with Fife Council and will my child be eligible for pre-school grant?

Sunshine Nursery is in partnership with Fife Council. Your child could be entitled to the educational grant. Your child must be aged between three and five years old to be eligible. Please contact us for further information on the grant.

What links does the nursery have to outside agencies?

Being part of the community is important to us. We have various links to outside agencies from a health visitor, speech therapist, the librarian to a dental nurse. We use these links to help support children, parents and staff.
